Ballpark is a free trivia party game. It collects as little as it can: no accounts, no cookies, no ads, and no third-party services. This page explains what it does handle, why, and what you can do about it.
Who runs Ballpark
Walrus Games, United Kingdom. We decide what Ballpark collects and why, so we're
responsible for it under data protection law (the "controller").
Questions or requests about your data:
What we handle and why
| What | Why, and on what basis | How long |
|---|---|---|
| The name and avatar you pick, your guesses and bets, and any questions a host adds | To run the game and show them to the other players in your room (to provide the service you asked for, GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)). | Only in the server's memory while the room exists. Never written to disk, except as below. |
| Questions a host writes, with their answers | Saved when a game using them starts, so we can review them and add good ones to the game's own questions. Only the question, the answer and the time are saved: never who wrote it, the room, or an IP address. Questions deleted in the lobby before the game starts aren't saved. (Improving the game, our legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f).) | Deleted after 12 months. Questions we add to the game stay in it. |
| Your IP address | Needed to connect at all, and used to slow down people guessing a room password (security, our legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f)). | Only in the server's memory. Never written to disk or logged. |
| Saved in your own browser: your name and avatar, your current game, how loud music and sound effects are, and your "Count me" choice | So the form is filled in next time, a refresh puts you back in your seat, and the game remembers what you chose. This stays on your device. It isn't a cookie, and as it only keeps what you asked for, it doesn't need your consent (UK PECR, EU ePrivacy rules). | Until you clear your browser's site data. |
| A random player ID, only if you choose "Count me" | To count how many different people play. With it, the server logs when you visit and when you create, join, start or finish a game, along with the room code and game settings. Never your name or IP address. (Your consent, Art. 6(1)(a).) | The ID is replaced after 13 months. Logged events are deleted after 25 months. |
Counting players is your choice
Nobody is counted until they choose "Count me" on the home screen. You can change your mind
there at any time ("Stop counting me"): your browser deletes the ID and stops sending one.
Past events stay in the log until they expire, but they're tied only to a random ID that
nobody can link back to you. If you'd like them deleted, send us that ID (it's
scribble.uid in your browser's site storage) and we'll remove them.
Where it's hosted
Ballpark runs on a server rented from Hetzner Online GmbH in Helsinki, Finland, under a data processing agreement. The data is stored there. We're in the UK, so when we review saved questions or player numbers, that data is reached from the UK; the EU recognises the UK's data protection as adequate, so no further safeguards are needed. Your data is never sold or shared, and fonts and all other files come from our own server.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR you can ask us to:
- tell you what data we have about you, and give you a copy
- correct it, or delete it
- stop or limit using it
- stop using it where we rely on our legitimate interests (saving questions, slowing down password guessing). You can object at any time, and we'll stop unless we have a strong reason to carry on.
- withdraw your consent to being counted, at any time
To use any of these, email us at the address above. It's free, and we'll reply within one month. We don't know who you are, so tell us what to look for: for player numbers, your player ID (see above); for a saved question, its wording. If we can't find anything linked to you, we'll tell you that.
Please don't put personal details in the questions you write.
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint) or, in the EU, to the data protection authority where you live or work.
Children
Ballpark doesn't ask anyone's age and doesn't collect more from anyone. In some countries, children under 16 need a parent's agreement before choosing "Count me".
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too.
